Mira Wasilewska
Mira has shown her artistic side very early in her school years. Her work received many praises from teachers and friends. Very creative by nature she enjoyed knitting, designing and sewing her clothing as well as making jewellery. As a teenager she was seriously considering studying art, but was convinced, mostly by her parents, to pursue more tangible career. As a result she studied medicine and spent a couple of years practising family medicine in Warsaw. Following immigration to Canada in 1988, she was actively involved in the medical research at the University of Ottawa. For the last several years she worked in the field of health education and promotion running a consulting firm. Her busy professional life combined with raising young children left very little time to engage in the art. She would paint only occasionally using acrylics, as she considered it to be a safe medium. It must have been a lucky coincidence that her departure from an active professional career coincided with an opening of the Shenkman Art Centre in Ottawa east end. The variety of courses offered by the Ottawa School of Art allowed her to explore new media and improve her skills in acrylics.
Her work has been exhibited at the Ottawa School Of Art Gallery, Promenade Arteast Show and Trinity Gallery at Shenkman Art Centre. She has been an active member of Ottawa Watercolour Society and an executive member of Arteast where she took on the role of a coordinator of the Annual Juried Art Exhibition held every fall. Some of her work was acquired by private collectors as well as public institutions in Canada and Poland. She has also created a number of large scale portraits commissioned by private customers. She has recently moved from Ottawa and now lives in Winterbourne together with her husband. Her artistically inclined grown up children now live in Toronto, which leaves her plenty of time to explore new possibilities in the field of art.
Mira approaches each painting with a sense of adventure, whether it is a landscape, floral or an abstract composition. Recently she added to her interests painting on silk, creating beautiful scarves, as well as functional pottery.
