Mary Flatt
“I currently am producing representational art in the form of graphite drawings, watercolours and soft pastel. My subject matter ranges from still life to landscapes as well as animals. I derive inspiration from nature and the beautiful scenery of many hiking vacations. Visiting art galleries and museums in Britain, Italy and France has further stimulated my interest in the arts.
In some pieces I focus on the detail to produce a very precise drawing or painting. In other pieces I choose a softer, more impressionist approach to express the subject matter. The pleasure for me now is in further developing my skills as an artist and getting lost in the moments of doing.”
Mary was born and grew up in Dundas, Ontario. She graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honours degree in Psychology and initially worked in social services. While living in Vancouver, she attended Kwantlen College University earning a Diploma in Interior Design and then worked in residential drafting and design. After raising a family in Waterloo, she worked at the University of Waterloo.
Upon retirement in 2015, Mary decided to pursue her earlier interest in the arts taking classes with local artist, Albert Casson as well as courses at Homer Watson Gallery and now at the Dundas Valley School of Art. She is also a member of the Pastel Artists of Canada.
