Brenda Hunniford
I have recently come to creative expression through visual art. I have been inspired by my experiences; first by painting strictly with acrylics and now with using different media. Beginning with my first experience, I have embraced the vivid colours, flexibility, and fluidity of painting with acrylics.
I just lately retired from being a teacher after a 25 year career. I have not had any formal art education as I only took my first art course in acrylics in 2009 and my creative style is evolving with time. I have continued to expand my learning about art and painting beginning with a variety of courses and open studio classes at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts. Recently, I have taken classes at the Dundas School for the Arts and participated in group open studio classes with local artist Laurie Wonfor Nolan at her Roseville studio.
I was initially drawn to painting sea/landscapes because of my fascination with the sweeping nature of skies and horizons. At first, I was moved to capture the look of clouds and the reflective qualities of water, then experimenting with interpreting natural objects. As my subject interests continue to evolve, I have recently begun studying the relationships among line, depth and movement through abstract forms and incorporating mixed media.
My choice of colour palate has organically evolved over time and I have enjoyed the challenge of incorporating other art materials and combining colour and line within works. My interest in what to paint is fluid as is evident from the range of subjects in my works, changes depending on the seasons and what has inspired my ‘eye’. I can definitely say that I am never quite sure what direction my artworks may take next!
As my self-image as an artist develops momentum, I am realizing how much I am motivated by the interplay of colour and light on objects, landscapes, and life around me. I will continue to explore how the feelings evoked in me by what I see influence my interpretation of what I am moved to express on canvas.
Brenda has been in a number of local art exhibitions and juried shows including; Cambridge Juried Art Show at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts; Box 13 Juried Exhibition Kitchener; Cambridge Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts; Wellington Artists’ Gallery and Art Centre Annual Juried Art Exhibition; Visual Elements Juried Exhibition at the Woodstock Art Gallery; Hespeler Village A Day and A Night.
