A note from the Judicator, Ralph Heather:
It was a pleasure working with you and Roger this past week and I appreciate the privilege of judicator for your fine art photography exhibition “Viewfinding”.
I’d like to thank the Kitchener Waterloo Society of Artists for bringing this exhibition to life so we can all celebrate the art of creating.
As a juror I am always an artist first, constantly drawn to the creative process and therefore to others that create, appreciating all the various and seemingly limitless possibilities, while admiring the craftsmanship and hard work that goes into the creation of a work of art. I applaud every photographer who submitted and I thank each of you for your courage to share your vision.
This fine art photography exhibition represents a diverse snapshot of current approaches to photographic image making, while still holding on to the foundation principle of capturing moments that otherwise would be forgotten in the next moment.
In this exhibition’s submissions l found myself very impressed with the consistently high level of dedication to the quality of workmanship in every photograph I viewed. And I was personally inspired by the many creative ideas that you all brought to life. The award winning photographers each were able to draw my attention to their work by using composition, shapes, texture. and colour, to create an emotional response that invited my curiosity to look closer and deeper. That is where I found the engaging stories that were being told.
Yes, photography continues to grab our attention and speak directly to our emotions, evoking and inspiring.

Adrienne Zoe is a professional photographer who is passionate about birds. This is her story for the last three photos of blue birds.
This past spring I got my dream - an opportunity to photograph Eastern Bluebirds on private property with freedom to setup my shots. These birds are under conservation efforts to bring back their population. They are cavity nesters. Their population dropped due to loss of nesting cavities in the environment and through competition with other agressive bird cavity nesters (starlings, house sparrows, and tree swallows). If only land owners wouldn't get rid of dead trees and farmers wouldn't replace wooden fence posts with metal. Bluebird numbers have been increasing since the introduction of the bluebird box program whereby boxes are built for them to nest in. Volunteers set up boxes in their natural habitats -- open fields where the bluebirds can hunt for bugs. With the conservation support, the Bluebirds are successfully breeding. I am fortunate to be able to work with one nesting pair. I was careful to research how to go about the photography without stressing them as this was very important to me. Using a bird blind and food to entice them, I managed to get a few shots on a flower perch setup. It is far easier to photograph them around their environment on natural perches of their choice; the Bluebird and flower photography is a learning curve and challenge, and I am so happy to be able to share some precious results."
