June Birds

Welcome to the KWSA monthly art show. Each month our members submit their artwork related to a specific theme.
The June theme is "birds". Obviously we have many members who are passionate about birds. You can see work here that is both technical and emotive. Birds have a different importance and place for each artist.

Adrienne Zoe is a professional photographer who is passionate about birds. This is her story for the last three photos of blue birds.

This past spring I got my dream - an opportunity to photograph Eastern Bluebirds on private property with freedom to setup my shots.
These birds are under conservation efforts to bring back their population. They are cavity nesters. Their population dropped due to loss of nesting cavities in the environment and through competition with other agressive bird cavity nesters (starlings, house sparrows, and tree swallows). If only land owners wouldn't get rid of dead trees and farmers wouldn't replace wooden fence posts with metal.
Bluebird numbers have been increasing since the introduction of the bluebird box program whereby boxes are built for them to nest in.  Volunteers set up boxes in their natural habitats -- open fields where the bluebirds can hunt for bugs.  With the conservation support, the Bluebirds are successfully breeding.
I am fortunate to be able to work with one nesting pair. I was careful to research how to go about the photography without stressing them as this was very important to me. Using a bird blind and food to entice them, I managed to get a few shots on a flower perch setup. It is far easier to photograph them around their environment on natural perches of their choice;  the Bluebird and flower photography is a learning curve and challenge, and I am so happy to be able to share some precious  results."
