Biography / Statement

Monte was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Although his painting career was founded in London, Ontario, he presently works in a Kitchener home studio.

Since 1962, Monte has shown his work in many private and public galleries. After retirement in 1992, Monte has pursued a full-time career in art. His interests continue to vary in scope, from monumental murals to contemporary, abstractive art and computer- generated images.

"Early in 2004 I moved closer to simpler, expressionistic work. These action works are objective, expressions of our place in the universe. Subject matter is secondary to the exploration of line, space and texture. Basic colours and fluid movement are of prime importance throughout the canvas. Since 2006 Monte has been exploring a series of work called “ Behind the Mask “. Mysterious acrylic paintings, magical symbiotic collages and transformed prints go’ beyond our reality.’ He believes that we sometimes wear masks to hide our true thoughts and feelings. Boldly-coloured, canvas paintings of masked figures examine our role in the workplace. They exist in a world beset by global issues. Clear, linear outlines focus on the unknown figure

Romantic, symbiotic collages, magically transport us to a changed existence. These assembled images from the 18th century magically reveal a changed existence. The same issues of power, love and control are exposed in these reborn compositions. Transformed prints move beyond the traditional view of masks. Monte examines the relationship between the owner and the mask. Through photographic studies one sees a spiritual co-existence between humankind and the created mask. A spiritual relationship is revealed in the surrealistic print."
